Simple Fish Curry (No Onion No Tomato)

A quick, comforting, and flavorful fish curry made with basic spices and mustard oil.

Ingredients
  

  • 200 grams fish
  • Salt to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon red chilli powder
  • For Frying
  • Oil as needed
  • For Curry
  • 2 –3 tablespoons mustard oil
  • ½ teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • Few curry leaves
  • Spice Masala
  • 1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • Salt to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon fish curry masala optional
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • ½ teaspoon red chilli powder
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red chilli
  • Other
  • 2 –3 tablespoons water for roasting spices
  • 1 cup water for gravy
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Method
 

  1. In a bowl, gently mix fish with salt, turmeric, and red chilli powder. Marinate for 10–15 minutes (optional).
  2. Heat a little oil in a pan and lightly fry the fish until golden. Keep aside.
  3. Heat mustard oil in a deep pan until it starts smoking.
  4. Add fenugreek seeds, dry red chillies, and curry leaves. Fry for a few seconds.
  5. Add all ground spices with 2–3 tablespoons water. Cook on low flame until aromatic.
  6. Add 1 cup water and bring the gravy to a boil.
  7. Gently add fried fish, cover, and cook for 5 minutes on low flame.
  8. Turn off the heat, garnish with fresh coriander, and let it rest for a few minutes.

Notes

Do not overcook fish to avoid breaking
Frying fish is optional but recommended
Coconut milk can be added for a richer curry
Adjust spices as per taste
